"If you always wanted to visit Jerusalem some day now is your chance to send at least a part of you there - a swatch of fabric, your signature, and a button. Fabric Artist Rachel Roggel came up with the idea about two years ago when she realized how many people wanted to visit but haven't done so for any of several reasons. Some people are afraid of bombings. "Some cannot come because of their health, or for money reasons," she said. While living in Jerusalem Roggel decided to invite people to send swatches of fabric decorated with their signature and a button which she could work into quilts. The quilts would not only visit Jerusalem, but travel the rest of the world. The response was tremendous. "I received hundreds of fabric swatches from people age 5 to 92." Some, she said, wanted to go to Jerusalem for religious reasons. Others wanted to go just to see what it was like. She has had submissions from all over the world including Antarctica, Japan, and New Zealand." The Oakland Tribune, Art Notes, April 10, 1998, by Jolene Thym.
